If you see something, say something

CASA Kane County, Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Kane County Sherriff’s Office, and the Regional Office of Education are asking that you review the information below on how to keep our children safe!

The message is simple: IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING.

Please read these 5 steps below to protect children, educate and report suspected abuse.

How to report abuse or neglect

1. Read the Letter of Introduction

2. Review Legal Mandated Reporting List

Learn who and what is a mandated reporter and click to download the complete list.
Mandated reporters include but are not limited to:
  • School personnel
  • Medical personnel
  • Social services/mental health professionals
  • Law enforcement personnel
  • Coroner/Medical examiner personnel
  • Child care personnel
  • Members of the clergy
You don’t need to be a mandated reporter to make the hotline call.

3. Listen to Mandated Reporting Podcast

Mandated Reporting Podcast (Recorded: March 28, 2015, Length: 18 minutes) This is a special podcast sponsored by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office and CASA Kane County. Anyone who is in their professional capacity and/or in contact with children who know of alleged abuse and neglect must call.

Please note that not only is it required for mandated reporters to promptly report suspicions of abuse or neglect to DCFS but also that the report is confirmed, in writing, within 48 hours of the initial report. Download the Written Confirmation of Suspected Child Abuse/Neglect Report below.

4. Train to Become Certified​

Everyone who suspects child abuse or neglect should call the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services Abuse Hotline to make a report, but Mandated Reporters are required by law to do so. The purpose of this online course is to help all Illinois Mandated Reporters understand their critical role in protecting children by recognizing and reporting child abuse.
